In addition to its artistic programme, over the past twenty five years the Gate has continued to refurbish, improve and expand the 18th century building in which it is housed. However, not being a custom built theatre, the Gate has many logistical problems. Even today, in order to deliver our sets, they first have to be cut up and then reassembled and there is no space for a rehearsal room, for storage, for technical staff or for offices.
To overcome these restrictions and to give the Gate’s directors and designers the additional space they need in order to continue providing you, our audience, with the high quality productions that you have come to expect, we have decided to act now and building has already begun on our new wing. This extension will give us offices, a workshop area, a rehearsal room, a theatre archive, an expanded box office, and most importantly, a theatre laboratory for new and emerging creative talent. The cost will be in excess of €6 million. To date we have raised just over €5.2 million of this through the generous support of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, the ACCESS Funds and The Ireland Funds, as well as through the very kind donations from individuals, who will be remembered as life-long friends of the Gate.
